COFFIN, CHINESE

H1995.1241

Solid wooden coffin made from 10cm thick slabs of timber joined with wood wedges. Lid is hinged with modern brass hinges, not inset, and probably not original. Outside originally painted in red and black, now mostly worn away. Lid has remnants of a lock; 8 metal loops around base of coffin indicate where it may have been tied down to prevent shifting during a sea voyage. Ends and side of coffin slightly convex, as is lid. Despite its external size, the interior size of the coffin is only 42w x 179l. Four corresponding cuts in lid and base indicate where 'keys' might have secured top.
