RADIO TELEPHONE CALL BOX

H1992.15

Square wooden box. Lid lifts to reveal radio type telephone. Manufactured at Australian National Railways workshops. Came into use shortly after completion of the rail line across the Nullabor in 1917. These boxes were connected to telephone line along the railway line from Kalgoorlie to Port Augusta where a permanent monitor was connected so people could contact control and request provisions etc. This box was connected at Parkston at the far end of the line. With the introduction of a new radio link this system became obsolete.
