Wooden box, oblong with hinged lid, containing 60 coloured pastels. The lid was originally printed 'Pastel/ Lefrane' but this has been overlaid with a 'WINSOR & NEWTON,/ LIMITED'....sticker, black printed on grey (now almost missing). No '615' on lid also, printed. The lid is held on with a simple wire hinge; the box is stapled and nailed, with tongue and grooved corners. Another Lefranc label (ex Paris) adorns inside of lid. Pastels are covered in, and seated on, cotton wool. Each pastel is wrapped in waxed paper, bearing the series letter, colour description and number. At the ends of each of the two rows of pastels are several tightly twisted bits of paper, construed to resemble pencils so that the ends can be used for smudging pastel drawings.
