PICTURE LOTTO

H1989.389

Game called 'WHAT IS THIS'. a. Three cards each having cutout space for six cutout shapes Within the space on the card is a picture of the missing cutout and a number. Each cutout is made of cardboard and brightly coloured. They have the same number on the back. There are three cards in all. The back on one is labelled 'By the Water Side', another is 'In the Garden', and the third is 'At the Zoo'. On the back of each cutout and card 'F.P. ROGERS' is stamped in blue ink. b. Box and lid. On the front of the box is a large picture of four children playing the game. It also states 'WHAT IS THIS? / A NOVEL PICTURE LOTTO FOR YOUNG CHILDREN' and gives the manufacturing details. Inside the lid are detailed instructions for playing the game. The cards are dealt to all the players but one who gets the cutout figures. That person holds up one picture at a time and it is taken by the child with the corresponding space on their card. The first to have all the spaces on their card filled with the correct cutout wins. It notes that for older children the numbers could be called out instead of showing the pictures. In addition it notes that the cards may also be used to teach which objects will be found in a particular place eg. by the water side. The inside of the lid also briefly describes two other Spiers games, 'The Merry Game of Floundering' and 'Nipper's Ups and Downs'. The toys were used by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to Teacher's College in 1930 and joined the Education Department of W.A. in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park, and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She also made and purchased a large collection of puppets which were used as teaching aids. These are accessioned under numbers H88/613 to H89/307 (not inclusive).
