SAUCE TUREEN AND COVER
CH1979.470.1-2
[.1] base
[.2] lid
Footed blue printed tureen with matching cover. Medium blue "Balkan scene" pattern. Number record of pattern in reference books. Pattern includes figures in Balkan or Turkish dress outside a probable Islamic tomb, which has classical friezes. Possibly a grave- robbin scene. Scene repeated on lid. Knob in shape of a shell. Bluish glaze, rippled, suggesting a date in the late 18th or early 19th centur (inaccurate), as Nairn thought. No. 105. Only mark is on lid. "X" in under-gla blue. Only similar mark in Godden is that of the Bristol Porcelain Co., 1750-5 & 1770-81, but no record of this firm making earthenwares. Firm appears to continue as Bristol Pottery, 1785-1825 which manufactured earthenwares, but ma is completely different. Ref. Godden, Encyclopaedia, pages 102-3, no. 608.
