BAT, Cricket, miniature, 1937

H2007.105

Miniature varnished wooden cricket bat with cylindrical black rubber covered handle. The blade of the bat has a flat face, while the back has a ridge concentrated in the centre. The handle is spliced into the blade, which is visible in a v shaped piece of wood on both sides of the blade. The rubber covering the handle is cracked and perishing, and worn away at the top. The handle is made from 3 strips of wood, adhered together with a red rubber(?) adhesive, visible where the black rubber covering has worn away. The flat face of the blade is printed with ‘GRADIDGE/LIMITED’ in both the top left and right corners. Under this is printed ‘Imperial Driver/(crown)/De Luxe/Super/SELECTED/ENGLISH WILLOW’. Below is printed ‘GRADIDGE’ in stylised lettering. The bottom 2/3 of the bat is printed with 14 autographs of Australian men’s cricket players. The names are: Vic Richardson, Stan McCabe, Chuck Fleetwood-Smith, Ben Barnett, Ernie McCormick, Arthur Chipperfield, Bill O’Reilly, Leo O’Brien, Morris Sievers, Len Darling, Bill Brown, Lindsay Hassett (?), Bert Oldfield, Jack Fingleton. Stamped on the back of the blade is ‘Made in Australia’. A piece of green plastic ribbon is tied around the handle, from which it can be hung.
