POSTCARD, World War 1

H1999.147

Colour postcard with image of five roosters (coloured in the colours of various European flags - one is red blue and white, another is yellow black and red) all pecking at a large broken egg which has a black, white and red stripe on it. Two roosters are sitting on a thatched barn roof. Printed in black at top of postcard "1915". The five has been crossed out in pencil and a "6" written next to it. There is the continuation of a letter (probably started on a previous postcard) on the reverse. Writer has written a title at the top of the card "On very Active Service in France."
"....Our Sergeant/Major was killed in the last action. He was my greatest friend. / We went to a small village to night. But I did not enjoy my self./ I could not take my mind from Valhalla and Boulder life [or 'City?]./If I do not do any more I think that I have done my bit (best?). I would like you to see me know [now]. I tell you that you would laugh. /We are having supper of tin meat and hard biscuits. One is/playing a mouth organ and the other is trying to sing but he/has a very bad voice like mine they wont stand me singing at all./ So now I must wish all at Valhalla the best of wishes/with lots of love and thousand of kisses for yourself./From yours lovingly Jack E. Bonney xxxxxxxxxx"
