POCKET WATCH - 'ROTHERHAM'S'
H1995.1006
Silver metal pocket watch manufactured by Rotherham's, London. White enamel face with roman numerals on main dial and arabic numerals on inner dial (for seconds). Hinged cover on front and back; back has hole for key winding (key missing). Front cover features an embossed shield shape in the centre, surrounded by a circle terminating in an "arrow" shape. Remainder of front and back features remnants of a fine cross hatch pattern.
Inside back cover are hallmarks 'RR', 'C', a leopard's head and a lion, and the number '4/299'. Several minute numbers have been scratched as well, the most distinct being '75/2', '9842A' and '55945'. Some hallmarks on inside of front cover, except crown is missing.
The date was identified from the hallmarks, reproduced in 'The Book of Old Silver', S.B. Wyler. Crown Publishers Inc, New York, 1937, p.133.
A yellowing synthetic polymer 'face' has been used as a replacement for the original face.
The pocket watch includes a ring for hanging. When found at the Willeton Store it was attached to a chain numbered CH82.172.
