RIFLE, Lee Enfield Mk III

1907-1950s. This Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield Rifle Number I Mk III was originally issued to the NSW Royal Australian Naval Reserve. It was subsequently released from there and re-issued to the Militia or Volunteer Defence Corps in the 1930s or 40s in WA. One of the Militia Units in WA was the 10th Light Horse. Because of the long service life of this particular rifle, many parts have been replaced as they wore out. The barrel, made in Sept 1942 was fitted in Feb 1950. Rifle is marked on rhs under bolt "Crown / ER / B.S.A.Co. / 1908 / Sht. LE / III", rhs of butt is marked "NSW / RANR / O / 409" " BSA Co Birmingham (in circle) / III" "sale mark" "5 / 14223" Serial No 32844 . Proof Marks British & Australian Accessories Leather sling. Oil bottle & pullthrough in butt trap. Sling marked "Made by / Butler Bros (Aust) Ltd / Creek St Brisbane" Modifications Some old issue marks cancelled. Fore top wood replaced Bore Rifled Barrel Shape Round Sights Blade fore, adjustable "u" rear. Calibre .303 inch Charge/Projectile Cordite / cupro-nickel Ignition Centre fire Action Bolt, repeater Previous Registration .................
