BANNER, HOUSE

H1991.78

Green and gold banner made for Alexander house, Scotch College possibly for display during intra-school sporting events. The banner was rejected by the school for unknown reasons with three others made for other houses of the school. In all, there are ten houses at the school. The banner is rectangular with yellow loops at opposite ends through which supporting rods can be inserted, the lower is covered by a yellow fringe. At the centre a rampant lion is appliqued and quilted with rows of parallel stitching; the tail, mane and two legs are sewn in silver. The lion has a green eye and some outlining has been worked in black. It stands on a green appliqued shield and, below, there is a green banner monogrammed in yellow, "ALEXANDER". The House was named after W. Alexander, who was one of the strongest advocates for the organisation of a Presbyterian school in the 1890's
