PENCIL SHARPENER, Simplex

H1989.771

The main body of the sharpener (which is made of brass) is a pointed cylindrical shape resembling a pointed pencil tip. A modern standard size pencil may be inserted into the opening. The pointed end is split and has a an exten- tion with an iron sharpening blade attached to it. The opening consists of four prongs which are slightly narrow- er than the main body thus being able to give the pencil a better grip when it is being sharpened. The body has an M shaped handle attached to the wider end. A number of markings appear on the body of the sharpener in a decorative border, some of which is slightly worn. They are as follows; A bird with outstretched wings carry- ing a branch with it's feet / "SIMPLEX" / two triangles facing east - west / "SHARPENER" / "PAT DEC.11.06" / No- 650".
