MATCHBOX, Safety

H1989.177

Shallow rectangular wooden box, hollow and open at the two smallest sides to allow the closely fitting wooden tray to slide through. The box and tray appear to be made of thin pieces of pine bound with blue paper. The external sides of the box are impregnated with a coating that creates the friction necessary to light the match. These rough surfaces are probably made of a mixture of red phosphorous and sand. White paper label with printed text in black: 'J. GLEESON/ Tobacconist/ 657 Hay Street./ 63 Barrack Street,/ and 247 William Street,/ PERTH/ Telephone: A1645/ I communicate with/ Hobart Every Mail./ Agents for/ GOLDEN CASKET.'
