MATCHBOX, Safety

H1989.175

Shallow rectangular wooden box, hollow and open at the two smallest sides to allow the closely fitting wooden tray to slide through. The box and tray appear to be made of thin pieces of pine bound with blue paper. The external sides of the box are impregnated with a coating that creates the friction necessary to light the match. These rough surfaces are probably made of a mixture of red phosphorous and sand. White paper label on top surface, printed in red and black design and text: 'THE THREE POODLES/ AVERAGE CONTENTS 60 MATCHES/ MADE IN SWEDEN/ REGISTERED TRADE MARK/ IMPREGNATED SAFETY MATCH'. There are 3 black stylised poodles sitting as the central motif surrounded by scrollwork and text.
