DELFT WARE PLATE
CH1981.282
This plate is probably English delft ware, an earthenware body dipped into white tin oxide, painted then coated with glaze and fired. The decoration is of a gentleman dressed in a Chinese style outfit and approaching a bird on tree. The colours are cobalt blue (most common), purple and yellow (less frequently used), and green (uncommon). Borders at rim: plain circle of blue, wavy yellow and purple dots. The number is barely discernible on the base. Heavily potted, no stand. Ref: Hughes 1968:
