PENCIL PORTRAIT, in wooden frame

[1] Pencil Portrait: Inscriptions: Signed and dated: "Nightingale / Sept 1840" pencil lower right. Upper left corner blind stamp reads: "Turnbulls Crayon Board" around an artist's palette. [2] Wooden frame, contains copy print of pencil portrait which was produced for 'Foundations of Fremantle' exhibition. Note on back of frame reads: "Likeness of myself and / Little Kate Leake aged 6 years / M.A. Leake age 39 / September 1840 / Before sailing for Swan River. Subject Matter: Seated profile portrait of Mary Ann and Kate Leake. Other: Luke Leake arrived WA October 1829, followed by wife Mary Ann in 1833 with three of their seven children. 1834 Catherine Ann born. Luke died 1838, aged 54, Mary Ann and two children left for England February 1839. Arrived back in WA 14 March 1841 with one child. This pencil sketch of Mary Ann and Kate must, therefore, have been made in England. Mary Ann Leake granted lot 391 in Fremantle between 1829 and 1837. Catherine Ann married James George Lee Steere 16 June 1859 London came to Perth per "Oryx" 21 April 1866.
