CERAMICS artefact recovered from Elizabeth

Broken pottery sherds. All white in colour. 3 appear to be from same stoneware vessel, comprising 1 rim sherd and 2 conjoining handle sherds.

The fourth sherd (a broken china cup base) is of a finer glazed ware. Marked GLAD and MAD = Gladstone China, Longton, Staffs. This is post 1950 and cannot be from the Elizabeth wreck. May have washed in from old rubbish tip in eroding dune. See Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks by G. Godden pp.274.

Elizabeth

Driven ashore in a gale. Lies at the foot of Warton Road Cottesloe. Normally buried in sand. Wreckage is visible between the shore and an outlying reef. A cannon, one of a number on board remains at the SW corner of the reef. Others were recovered in the 1960s.
