DHI4526 - Pewter

Dirk Hartog Island

Pewter artefact recovered from Dirk Hartog Island

Button, regimental, cone shank w/ steel, loop. Relief markings - front: crown and ‘99’. Back:’GILPIN & Co. LONDON’.

William Gilpin & Co. of 1 Northumberland Street, Strand, were ‘army clothiers’ (see Post Office London Directory, (1846), 1994: 243).
[The 99th Regiment was the military regiment serving in the colony at the time of the Eglinton wreck, i.e. 1852. David Hutchison (1976) reported finding buttons marked ‘LONDON’ at the Sammy Well (Perseverant) site. Unfortunately this button was mislaid (see Hutchison report, 3 May 1976). The button may relate to the detachment of troops stationed on the island in the 1850s.]
