SHAWLS (3)

CH1972.234.a-c

Addition 2.4.79:
(a) Paisley. Silk and wool, woven pattern all over. Predominantly red, green and yellow. Knotted silk fringe in alternate bands of green, black, mauve and cream. 'Shawl' size (6' x 6') although a bit smaller than this. Pattern all over and materials suggest English or French manufacture circa 1850s-70s. (Ref. J. Irwin, 'Shawls', pp. 32-6).
(b) Woven shawl.
Addition 15.12.78 (Information from Gordon Suckling):
(c) Paisley shawl. Wool and silk, fringe attached. Reversible all over pattern indicates circa 1860 date. Weighs more and is rarer than non-reversible.
1860-65 is the last period of all-over pattern shawl due to the popularity of printed shawls.
