MEDAL, Franco British Exhibition 1908, in Case

H1990.301

a. Gold coloured medal. On the obverse are three allegorical female figures, one Britannia. A shield with "RF" stands next to another figure, probably representing France and the other figure is winged. Around the edge, "LONDON / MDCCCCVIII". Designer mark "F. BOWCHER. F / 1908" near rim, also maker's mark "VAUGHTON. BIRM." On reverse: robed female figure with left arm raised and a laurel wreath near her feet. Nearby is a building, possibly the Exhibition Building. Printed around the edge "FRANCO BRITISH EXHIBITION". In plaque near base "WESTERN AUSTRALIAN / MUSEUM & ART GALLERY / ROCKS & MINERALS". Around lower edge "VAUGHTON BIRM RD 535695 / F. BOWCHER. F. 1908". b. Green and gold case with a hinged lid, on the top "FRANCO-BRITISH / .1908. / EXHIBITION". The base of the box is lined with green velvet and has a silk ribbon to facilitate removal of the medal. Box lid is lined in ivory silk, gold printed "P.VAUGHTON & SONS / GOLDSMITHS & MEDALLISTS / BIRMINGHAM." Between 1878 and 1890, as part of its effort to attract investors to the Swan River Colony, the government sent agricultural and mineral specimens - the latter borrowed from the Mechanics' Institute and the Reverend C.G. Nicolay's collection, to five intercolonial and international exhibitions. After federation, specimens continued to be sent to exhibitions, including the 1908 Franco-British Exhibition where this medal was awarded.
