CHEST OF DRAWERS

H1991.120

Rough, home-made wooden chest containing 6 drawers for shed-storage of tools, washers and handyman's equipment. The cabinet is a wooden box, once used to store and deliver Commonwealth Bank money boxes (the building-shaped, rectangular metal kind). Lettered on top of the chest: 'COMMONWEALTH/ BANK OF AUSTRALIA/ 200 MONEY BOXES'. Over the rear right hand side where part of a slat is missing, a flattened section of tin is nailed, reading 'VACUUM OIL/ CO/ PTY LTD'. Inside, at the centre is a shelf of 3 unsecured lengths of timber. The drawers are bullion boxes from the Mint; five have been fitted with a wooden half cotton reel handle and one, an old brass knob. Each drawer, or bullion box, has a frame of four sides, with a semi-circular depression on right and left, top and bottom respectively. The attached flat wooden base also has a depression which aligns with the lower depression on the side of the box to make a round recess. Into this a wax seal was imprinted as the boxes were packed and stacked at the Mint. Any opening of the boxes would have broken the seal and alerted guards or officials of theft or interference. Although a pattern with a crown is discernable on the remaining wax of the rectangular seals in the depressions of the drawers, none are complete. The side of one box is lightly marked in blue 'WIRELE...' (Wireless?).
