Male marionette, pixie. Body - Head is made of paper mache, limbs are made from narrow dowels, flat wooden body sections and wooden hands. Consists of 13 pieces, head, shoulder piece, 2 upper arms, 2 fore arms, 2 hands, back piece, 2 thighs , 2 lower legs. Head is made of papier mache with moulded pointed ears and wide open mouth. Face is painted brown/pink and has large eyes made from blue buttons with white and black circles around them. Hair is made from brown wool. Arms and hands are jointed with metal rings and can move in any direction. Hands are large and painted yellow. One string which passes through each hand works both arms. Legs are made in same way as arms, strings are attached to knees. Clothes - Pointed red felt hat, cotton yellow and grey checked all-in-one outfit with matching bow tie at neck, shiny bright green waistcoat with red-edged collar and 3 yellow buttons, hand stitched brown felt shoes with buckle Wooden handle is made from an old packing case which says "KRAFT CHEDDAR". The entire collection of marionettes and puppets, which includes 31 marionettes, 26 hand puppets (glove and rod), 20 puppet heads, 9 hand sticks, 3 stick dolls and a travelling stage, were used, and many were made, by Miss Frances Rogers. Miss Rogers, born on 19 Oct 1904, went to teacher's college in 1930 and joined the Education Department of WA in 1934. Between 1934 and her retirement in 1967, she taught at various country schools, took special classes for deaf and dumb children in Mosman Park and classes for mentally and physically disabled children in Leederville. She used the puppets as teaching aids for the disabled children.
