FENCING HELMET, Leon Paul Equipment Co, London
H1989.953
Helmet has a wire mesh face shaped like half an egg slit lengthways. This has a band of cotton sewn around the edge. Another section of mesh extends from the ears up and over the top of the head. This is edged with a narrower band of cotton. The neck is protected with a padded collar shaped piece of cotton which is attached to the bottom and sides of the head. At the top of the head a piece of metal curves from the front of the head on the inside, across the top of the head and part way down the back. The top of this is covered in white cotton, the remainder in white vinyl. There is a band of padding on the inside of the helmet corresponding with the wide edging around the face, this is covered in white vinyl. There is also padding for the chin which is covered in vinyl. Inside the neck covering is a label "LEON PAUL / EQUIPMENT CO. LTD. / 39 NEAL STREET / LONDON, W.C.2 / ENGLAND". There is an acute accent on the E of Leon. The number "3" or the letter "M" appear to have been written on the top of the helmet in pencil.
