CHEQUE WRITER, "Protectograph"

H1989.778

Former Kalgoorlie Mining Associates property. "Protectograph" is squat, rounded machine with lever at side. Has slit; cheque is inserted in slit, lever pulled down, and the imprint made. In figures, not figures and letters. 1937 edition of Handbook of Modern Business Equipment has a photograph of an earlier version of a similar protectograph and the explanation; "This machine has been designed to write the whole amount line in one operation. With this machine, which writes in figures, no work line is necessary. An enormous saving of time is thereby effected. The figures are specially designed to avoid overprinting, and the usual Protectograph method of breaking the fibres of the paper and crushing an acid-proof ink into the body of the paper has been employed."
