9 C gold set with large cabochon garnet. Plain rounded band with deep slits where attached to claw setting. Inside band impressed with maker's mark: '9C (rampant lion)'. Made by Alfred Jackson. Jackson was convicted of manslaughter in 1864 and transported to Western Australia for life. He arrived in December 1866 on board the 'Corona'. Jackson, b.1842 in London, d.3.10.1912 in Albany. Son of a jeweller, and apprenticed in 1854 to the jewellery firm of French and Sons of 5 Newcastle Place, Clerkenwell Close. He was a journeyman with the same firm when he killed an apprentice to whom he owed money. In 1875 he gained his ticket-of-leave and was employed by Fremantle jeweller, F. Mason, while on parole. On 1.6.1876 he married Julia Rosanna Chan, daughter of Hookan (Mahomet) Chan. Probably in the same year, he set up business as a jeweller possibly with financial assistance from his father-in-law. His young brother Matthew Chan was apprenticed to him. In 1881 he received his certificate of remission. In c.1884 he opened a business in Geraldton and in 1887 he moved to Albany where he opened the Clockhouse Jewellery Factory. At this time he made light pressed gold brooches under licence to Tuckfield an Eastern States jewellers, in addition to his other works. He continued working in Albany until his death in 1912. Jackson's mark is a lion rampant within a cartouche. It also includes the quality mark. This ring probably dates from his Albany period. See also H89.301 Brooch.
