STOLE, Cheesecloth

H1989.1045

Long narrow wrap of white cheesecloth with a machined hem on three sides. It is very heavily embroidered in white cotton. The top line of the pattern is leaves forming a cup shape with a round sun or moon inside. Below this is a geometric pattern of square lines The cheesecloth breaks at this point and the space is filled with round open patterns. These attach to geometric patterns and then cup shaped patterns as before. The border is scalloped and has embroidered holes in an enlarged broderie anglaise style. The pattern appears to be machine embroidered with the embroidery standing out considerably from the surface of the fabric. The machined hem is in blue cotton and is roughly done. The stole may have been adapted from another garment.
