SHELL PICTURE

CH1985.413

Twenty-three shells (all marine) with coral glued on black velvet, arranged to represent a flowering bush with butterfly. Heavy frame (oval) painted gild and maroon with low-relief carved design x 4. On back of frame: "FRAME FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / BY THE / EMPIRE ART COMPANY LIMITED / SYDNEY< NSW." The shells are from WA, NW Australia, New Zealand, and Indo-Pacific. The coral is WA. It is unlikely the coral has been painted, if not, its bright colour is unusually well preserved. Harry Baker's Scientific Shell collection was purchased by WAM.
