HAT, Straw Colour

CH1974.99

Straw colour, '1819' pencilled on trimming.
Addition 8/9/89: Hat is made of woven straw. The crown is flat and rectangular in shape. The brim is almost hidden underneath the crown. It is decorated elaborately with wide and narrow pieces of straw folded in many different ways. At the sides, wide straw has been folded like a length of ribbon to give loops. In the centre the straw is narrower and makes shapes more like flowers.
The crown of the hat is drawn in tightly with a piece of straw. One of the wide pieces of straw decoration has a very rusted pin of modern shape in it, but this does not fasten anything. Apart from this all the hat and decorations are of straw and everything is securely fastened with straw. It is a large hat and unusual in appearance. It may possibly date to the Spanish influence on costume accessories between 1808 and 1810, is probably pre 1830 but could really be from almost any part of the nineteenth century. One of the ribbon shaped decorations has '1819' written on it in pencil.
