6 saucers \ 6 cups \ 1 jug \ 1 sugar bowl, 2 handles Consulted with Peter Bindon (19 Jul 82): the writing is Chinese and is the potter's signature. The style of decoration and of writing is C19th. Decorated in ferric red and black with gilding. Continuous series of gentlemen in flowing robes. George Trotter (25 Mar 85): The marks signify: 9 = batch number, Tani = a name which translates as "valley", tsukuri to make, manufactured. So it is made by the Tani pottery, batch 9. It could be Chinese or Japanese from the marks.
