Today, the Minister for Culture and the Arts, Hon. John Day, announced the new design concepts and project timeline for the completion of the Welcome Walls at the Western Australian Museum – Maritime in Fremantle.

Adjacent to the Museum at Victoria Quay, the migrant tribute will be completed by the end of 2010.

The Minister has endorsed the design concepts drawn up to complete the walls by architects Cox Howlett and Bailey Woodland and the formal planning approvals process can now begin.

It is expected that construction of the final Welcome Walls will begin in the first half of 2010 and be launched by the end of the year.

The Museum and the project architects have also been working with Fremantle Ports to ensure the completed Welcome Walls integrates with the overall Fremantle Waterfront Masterplan.

The Welcome Walls project was launched as part of Western Australia’s 175th anniversary celebrations to pay tribute to those who arrived by sea through the Fremantle region, and to the positive impact migrants have made.

Once the Fremantle tribute is completed, it will display more than 21,000 inscriptions representing more than 45,000 migrants.
