  • Have fond memories and remember the man well! Spent 8 years on and off working with Alex at Otis from around 1962 on. He affectionately went by the nickname 'Ding', and that was never said in any disrespectful way.
He told me some of his life story about coming to Australia (with his father, I believe) and taking up a mining lease at Bullfinch, or, as Alex pronounced it - Boofinch! He was interred when WWII broke out and sent to the SW cutting timber.
On some jobs where we worked outside the city, I would give Alex a lift home to Leederville and meet Mama and get to see and receive some of the produce from his impressive vegie patch in the backyard.
A man of great wisdom, particularly for a young impressionable apprentice. He offered lots of advice and one very memorable counsel he offered me was in respect of dealing with girlfriends - "Don't let the little head rule the big head!" Never forgot that one.
One of life's great characters; great sense of humour; classical poker face at lunchtime card games with a sinister joy at winning (a real stirrer); loved and respected by most who worked with him.
