In December 1956 Toscana berthed in Cape Town where we encountered locals selling ice cream from a canvas box. I was mesmerized watching the 'fog' bellowing from the box. Mum bought oranges from a local market and gave me 3p for ice cream. I was 15 years old and bewildered by a strange cacophony of life I have only seen in films.
