John & Ann York & family came to the Swan River Colony with his brother Joseph & Mary York & family as indentured labourers to Squire Phillips at 'Callum Station' now known as Toodyay. John & Ann finally settled in Gingin, where John became the first Postmaster and Registrar, his home 'Creaton' being the office from which mail was despatched and collected in the 1850s.
