Samuel was the 6th child of William Williamson & Ann Ball. His father was also known as William Smith and changed his surname around 1850/55. Sam was a miner around the Yorkshire area as were his brothers and father. They lived for some time near Durham, Newcastle on Tyne. Sam migrated to Australia and was followed by his wife Emily and young children. Following time in Kalgoorlie they settled in Fremantle. He was responsible for building many sea walls and the wind mills. His original house still stands.
