John Walker served in the British Navy as a seaman and his ship was engaged in the Battle of Jutland. He insisted he was an orphan, however this was untrue. His parents were Paul & Matilda (nee Stead) Walker of 25 Peel St, Batley, West Riding, England. His father was a joiner by trade.
