Jan van Kampen was one of 12 children born in a small house on the s'Gravendamseweg in Noordwijkerhout. His future wife, Klaaske Arjetta (Jet) Haga (deceased 1977), arrived by ship in 1954. They had met, prior to his departure, in Amsterdam. He re-married in 1984, to Nies Kollis from Alkmaar.
