Toos van den Hurk-van Ginneken (Bergen op Zoom 1925-2021 Aubin Grove, Perth) was a sister of my mother Corrie de Mooij-van Ginneken, daughters of a garage owner from Bergen op Zoom, The Netherlands. Aunt Toos preferred her baptismal name Catherine, because her Dutch usual name had a somewhat strange meaning in English. Shortly after her marriage to uncle Cor van den Hurk, also from Bergen op Zoom, the couple emigrated to Perth. Initially, South Africa was considered, but in view of the safer situation, preference was given to Australia. After arriving in their new country, Toos sent numerous photos to her parents, which provide an impression of their former home in Bergen op Zoom and the sea voyage to Australia, including the stopover in Aden. But also photos of the car they received from Toos' father, the house they built themselves after arrival and the activities with other emigrants and their children they had met on the boat and with whom they would always remain friends.
