Formerly Frances Peel, my great grand-mother contracted rheumatic fever and boarded the ship on crutches & walked off unaided after a 3 month voyage to a warmer climate. Her husband John was a flour mill manager at Dongara, Fremantle & subsequently Guildford (Padbury's Mill). One of their daughters, Nerissa married Ernest Worth - their daughter Doris (my mother), is still alive aged 90 years and resides at the RAAF nursing home in Bullcreek, WA.

  • research seems to indicate my information not to be correct. One child died on the voyage out on the Daylight in 1875. I believe a son died in an industrial accident in the royal flour mill,Dongarra but no record of him being buried in Dongarra cemetary. I understood that my grandmother Nerisa was the youngest child of 13 (?) but it is hard to reconcile this with ages etc. Nerisa's youngest child was son Irwin who was killed in the pathfinder lancaster bombings of Germany in world war 2 . iworth@bigpond.net.au

  • I wouldn't have thought that John Turton had 13 children. I think he had four on the ship out and maybe one girl was born here. One boy died on the ship (see Battye Library diary by John Turton) and one boy died at about 17 or 19 years old-I thought of appendicitis.
