Michele left his fiancee Anna in Italy to look for a better life. Arriving in Western Australia in 1956, he worked in Kalgoorlie laying railway sleepers. In 1958, he was married by proxy, while Anna remained in Italy. He bought their first home in Fremantle in 1959 & was later joined by his wife that year.
