Charles deserted ship (a French whaler), and entertained locals with his violin. After a year in Albany, he walked to Perth with his friend Louis Langoulant. He married Caroline Jackson (in 1841) and they had 13 children. He was naturalised by Governor Fitzgerald (in 1851), was one of first settlers in South Perth (1853-98). He held the first licence to sell wine in the Swan River Colony. Lake Tondut, on his original homesite in Clydesdale Park South Perth, is named after him. There is some doubt about the date of his arrival in Albany - family history says 1835, but ship arrival records suggest 1838.
