Ernest arrived in WA and took up land in Toodyay (old Newcastle) WA and married Laura Louisa Growse, the daughter of Dr Growse the pioneer doctor in Toodyay. Ernest went to the Boer War in 1899. Ernest is the father of the late Dr Ian Oriel Thorburn, Head of RPH for many years.
