William & Irene arrived at Fremantle in 1955 with their four children, Laraine, Brenda, Howard & Stephen. They stayed in Fremantle for a short time then settled in Kwinana (Medina) in 1956. William worked on the tugs at BP Refinery, then eventually on the pilot boats at Fremantle Port Authority.
