Ralph Sweeney was one of 13 children born to Hugh & Catherine (nee McGinley) of Doaghcrabbin. Ralph worked in Scotland before immigrating to Australia in 1951. He settled at Dale River, South East of Perth. On the 3rd of December 1960 Ralph married Rosalie Squires. They had five children.
