My stepfather James was 57 and my mother Elizabeth was fifteen years his junior when we emigrated from Scotland. He brought us here on the ten pound scheme. My older sister Jessie was sixteen, I was fourteen, my younger brother Kenneth was eight and my sister Anne was four.
