George spent some time in Sydney and Western NSW before settling in the Ballina district on the Far North Coast of NSW. He joined the 2/4th Pioneer Battalion, A.I.F. during WW2. In 1941 married Virginia (Jean) Thurgate. He had one child, Diana Simpson.
