Harold & Lavinia married on 24/5/1919 in Mexborough, Yorkshire, England & made the brave decision to leave their homeland & travel to Perth, WA with their two young children, Joseph & Irene. They eventually settled in Nannup where Harold worked in the timber mills. They had two more children, Robert & Maurice. Harold died unexpectedly on 22/12/1941 due to complications received serving in WWI. Lavinia (Vin) died on 14/8/1963 of cancer. For their pioneering spirit, which has given their descendants many opportunities, we admire them.

This is my Grandparents on my Fathers side and I am very proud of their journey and that they chose Australia as their country of choice.I never new my grandfather but have fond memories of me " Nanna Shep" and her broad Yorkshire accent. Nanna was a brave and kind lady her never complained and always helped everyone who came in contact with her.

Harold and Lavinia Sheppard are the parents of my mother, Irene nee Sheppard Bettridge. I never unfortunately knew my Grandfather Harold but I recall with fond memories of my Grandmother Lavinia up until her passing in 1963. Every second Thursday Nanna would travel to our home Rivervale and would leave comics for us children to enjoy.
One distinct memory of my Grandparents family coming to Western Australia was through my mother telling me that the family had to go to the South-West to a 'Group Settlement' with other arrivals to WA, where they were given a tent and various working and living tools/essentials. After sometime, they didn't like it and left and then settled in Nannup. I believe the 'Group Settlement' was 'Group 61'. I acknowledge their fortitude into giving their descendants a great Country to live in.
