Served in the Austro-Hungarian Army before joining his brother, Anton, in Western Australia's Goldfields. He married Annie Gabelich at All Hallows Church, Boulder, in 1903. They farmed at Cookernup & Bickley before moving to Subiaco with their 8 children, Dominic, Lucia, Mary, Thomas, Victoria, Nicholas, John & Vincent.
