Gustav Schmechtig, arrived with his wife Leonore (29th birthday) and two sons, Peter and Klaus. The ship ran out of fresh water en route to Melbourne and it was necessary to call into the Port of Fremantle. The Schmechtig family therefore disembarked here because they had relatives in Perth.

Family Schmechtig disembarked in Fremantle on the 15th December 1953 and were not bound for Melbourne. They joined the Engelhardt family, Renate Engelhardt being Leonore's sister . The Engelhardt's had arrived on the 18th October that year and had moved into a rented house in Safety Bay in November. The families lived in that house together for a short time until the Schmechtig's moved I believe to Waikiki. Comment by Barbara Grant, (nee Engelhardt) Peter, Klaus and Holger's cousin.
