Childhood mainly Wiltshire. Interested in plants, little formal education but well read, joined Navy WW1. Migrated to Perth and worked throughout WA. Married Ruth Shepherd 1935. Children: John, Donald, Anne and Joseph. No other relatives in Australia. Loved the bush.
