There are so many Rhodes in western australia. My great great grandfather populated it with 17 children. He was George Frederick Rhodes, born in Gingin in 1879. My lot come from his second wife Mary Real who had 10 children... I can't find any info on her and suspect that she may have been a convict...I hope you are still having fun in that great part of the world. terrie.

i have to correct the last post... my great great grandfather was william james rhodes and i suspect he was a convict.....his son was george frederick rhodes and my great gran was sarah, one of his 9 siblings,
who married samuel risbey... the western australian govt. didnt want women, only men of good character. so maybe mary wasnt a convict...also , my great great grandfather didnt have 17 kids, i was adding william and ada rocks kids..... it is all too confusing at times...

Mary Real wasn't a convict. She was born in NSW. Her father was Bartholomew Real who was a convict ariving on the Prince regent to NSW in 1821 and mother Mary (maiden name Doherty not certain of this) My great Great grand father was William James Rhodes. Ada Rock is a dead end literally as she has a death cert and marriage cert, but no birth cert. If you can help please do! My dad was the son of Hilda Rhodes ( father unknown)daughter ofr Ada and William, though my dad was brought up as Ada and William's son!

I have to correct some information in some posts above. Mary REAL, the daughter of Bartholomew REAL and Mary DOHERTY was not the Mary REAL who married William RHODES. Bart's daughter Mary Ann was born 3 January 1828 and baptised on 6 January 1828.
Birth SOURCE: NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages: Registration Numbers: V1828929 127 / 1828 and V1828961 128 / 1828, both have:
REAL MARY; Father: BARTHOLOMEW; Mother: MARY
Mary was born Pittwater, NSW and is listed in the 1828 Census, living with her family in Kent Street, Sydney.

She married John Woodruff SYPHERS near Tumut 29 October 1851 (NSW BDM: V1851391 97)

John and Mary SYPHERS had seven children, all born in NSW. John died 17 December 1863 in South Gundagai NSW. Mary died 18 May 1899 in Grahamstown, NSW.

A more detailed family history, with primary sources is available if anyone is interested, however Bart, his wife Mary and daughter Mary did not leave NSW.

Following on from my post above, I now believe I have found the Mary REAL who married William RHODES. Mary REAL embarked for Perth, Western Australia from Plymouth, England on 12 July 1859 and arrived in Perth, Western Australia per the "West Australian" 20 October 1859.

Went to school (South Terrace Primary) Fremantle, with Kerry, Peter and Paul Rhodes in the late 1960's. Lost contact after primary school, wondering where they went from there, they lived in a house opposite Fremantle Esplanade on Marine Terrace, Father had something to do with police force, (I think)

Re: First post. Some confusion about George Frederick Rhodes, born in Gingin in 1879. His Parents were William Rhodes and Mary Real.(as stated above albeit I didn't have a middle name. He married Idahlia Mary Criddle dtr of William Criddle and Mary Anne Bufton. They only had three children according to my research. The first post said he fathered 17 children!!and had wrong wives!!

The last post 12 July 2015 is absolutely correct. The Criddle family have been in WA since 1829. Idahlia Criddle born 1916. They are not the same family as The Rhodes Family 454. So the first Visitor submitted comment who started this particular thread is not correct.
