Severe seasickness saw the family disembark at Fremantle instead of Melbourne. First stop was Holden Camp, Northam. Within 2 weeks, Piet had employment and moved his family into rented accommodation in Leederville where Nettie also took in lodgers. They then moved in State Housing homes, firstly renting in Medina, then purchasing and settling in Willagee.
